Crowns, Bridges, Veneers

Crowns, Bridges, VeneersTeeth are the strongest part of our body, however many things can weaken teeth such as tooth decay, trauma, grinding, large fillings and cracks. Once a tooth has been weakened, the structural integrity of the tooth, may need to be reinforced with a Crown. A Crown is like a helmet that is always hugging and securing the tooth. The Crown perfectly fits around the tooth and secures it together.

There are a number of different types of materials that Crowns can be made of. There are different advantages to each material. Crowns can be made in ceramic, porcelain over a metal alloy and gold. Dr Amjad and Dr Antonia will discuss which material is most suitable to suit your circumstance.

Veneers are used to improve the aesthetics of poorly shaped, broken and coloured teeth. They can also be used to close gaps between teeth. Veneers are different to Crowns as they only cover the front portion of the tooth.

When there is a missing tooth it may be suitable to seek to replace it with a Bridge by crowning the teeth on either side of the gap with a bridge tooth in the middle. Bridges are different to dentures as they are cemented and fixed in place and cannot be removed or dislodged when eating like a denture.

Crowns, Bridges and Veneers take two appointments to complete. In the first appointment, Dr Amjad and Dr Antonia will prepare the tooth and take an impression to have the Crown custom-made for your mouth. You will have a temporary resin restoration in place while your Crown is being custom-made. This appointment will generally take around 60-90 minutes. At the second appointment, the temporary Crown is removed and the permanent Crown is cemented in place. This appointment will generally take around 30 minutes.

The new Crown, Bridge or Veneer will not only improve the aesthetics and function of the tooth, it will also preserve the natural bite and prevent drifting and over-eruption of adjacent teeth. The Crown will increase the longevity of the tooth. With regular dental maintenance and excellent oral hygiene, they can last many years.
